The annual battle between fleas and your pet has begun

Knoxville (WVLT) - Have you been doing a lot of scratching lately? What about your pet? The annual battle between fleas and your pet has begun.

Experts say we\'re heading toward a record number of fleas this year, and as Volunteer TV’s Kim Bedford explains, getting them before they get to your dog or cat is key.

Summer is here and more fleas are out than usual. Steven Collins at Agri-Feed Pet Supply says normally fleas die out over the winter, but \"since we had a rather mild winter it wasn\'t cold and harsh enough to kill them off, so they never really stopped producing. So in combination with the weather getting warm again and flea season starting back up, it\'s just combined and made it worse.\"

The good news is constant bathing, dipping, and powdering are things of the past.

\"The topical treatments are the best way to go. They\'re the easiest, the cleanest, the cheapest, and you don\'t have to shampoo as much and it keeps the fleas off,” explains Collins.

Good news for Carmen Trammell. \"I\'ve got five dogs and they\'re all large and all in the house and I wouldn\'t have it any other way.\"

You may be surprised to find that Trammell never has any problems with fleas, her secret?

\"I use Frontline faithfully every month,\" she says.

The question in the minds of a lot of dog and cat owners is are the flea products you can get at the store just as effective, if not the same, as the ones available at your vet?

\"It\'s kind of a hit or miss. A lot of people say the BioSpot works very well for them and it\'s a good product and they never have any trouble with it. And a lot of people say it doesn\'t work as well for them and they go for the more expensive products,” says Collins.

\"If you\'re going to have a pet, you just need to spend what you have to be sure they\'re healthy because if you don\'t, you\'re going to end up paying for a much more serious illness,” Trammell says along with the topical treatments, keep in mind that your pets exposure to fleas depends on where you live and how much time you allow them outside.

If you have any questions or concerns about which flea products are best be sure to check with your veterinarian first.
