Rottweiler owner defends pet

CBC NEWS – The owner of one of the Rottweilers that attacked a group of dairy cows in Little Pond last week says his pet is not a danger to others.

\"Everybody in town, everybody anywhere, that sees my dogs – they just love them and everybody knows what happened and they can\'t believe that it was her,\" said James Blaisdell.

Three Rottweilers were involved in the attack. They were owned by members of the same family and were staying at the home of Preston Blaisdell. Preston had two of the dogs put down, but son James, didn\'t want that done to his dog.

He went to the humane society and took Jade home to his residence on the north end of Queen Street in Charlottetown.

Since new animal control legislation has not been proclaimed into law the society could not hold the dog.

The younger Blaisdell believes the attack on the cows only happened because his dog was in heat, and in a group with a male. He says Jade is calm now, and he doesn\'t believe she\'s a threat to anyone in the neighbourhood.

Preston Blaisdell said the attack was unexpected. He said he never kept them penned or tied up. He let them play with his grandchildren, and never worried about their safety.

When his wife called last week to say the three dogs had viciously attacked a group of cows, Blaisdell said he was surprised.

His initial reaction was to kill the dogs himself, but he decided to sign them over to the humane society and let it put the dogs down.

\"I have eight grandchildren and I wouldn\'t take that chance. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, when they come for me to sign the papers. And I figured I was doing the right thing.\"

Preston Blaisdell owned the male, named Oz. The two females involved in the attack belonged to his sons, who had both asked their father to take care of their dogs temporarily.
